"Future Ghosts"
featuring the artwork of Megan Frauenhoffer

My art explores emotions that hide between reality and the subconscious. I am interested in the particular emotional moments that become their own entity, taking control and shaping our being.

My prints and drawings illustrate different reveries reflecting on the effects of awkwardness, confusion, anger, grief, and loneliness. These moments of reflection are infused with fantastical tales culturally embedded from our childhoods. I use folktale allusions to connect to wider understanding of struggle and growth as well as reinvent the story’s outcome. Within these new phantasms, animals, spirits, doppelgangers, anthropomorphic figures, hybrid monsters, and heroic figures collide. Often in the series, a metamorphosis occurs that empowers or overwhelms the figure. The use of creatures alludes to the individual’s subconscious impulses and the primal animal nature in all of us.

I investigate these notions through a combination of illustrative detailing, emotive marks, and dark imagery using printmaking and drawing media. The combination of the different media allows me to create the unusual marks that contribute to the expressive qualities of the figure. An abstract and dreamlike state is evoked through the distressed surfaces, inkblot atmospheres, and nervous stuttering lines. The narratives are structured through an intuitive process where the compositions are created in response to the previous drawing or print application on the paper. This process reveals unconscious thoughts that filter through the conscious mind, invoking subjective interpretations based on personal and collective experiences.
